地理 Geography
パラオは、日本から遙か海を越えて、およそ３，０００ｋｍ南に下ったところにあります。グアム・サイパンに近く、南北約６４０ｋｍにわたって散在する５８６もの島々から成る国ですが、人が住んでいるのはわずか９島だけ。地図上でも、パラオの名前を見つけることは出来ますが、その国土まではっきりと見分けることは出来ません。それもそのはず、島々を合わせた総国土面積は、なんと三重県のおよそ１０分の１しかないのです。首都は2006年10月1日に、コロール州からダオブ島マルキョク州というところに遷都されました。総人口は約２万人と言われており、その約７割がパラオ人で、残り大半はフィリピン系の人々で占められているのだとか。
Palau is located approximately 3000 km south of Japan near Guam and Saipan.
The country itself is made up of 586 islands covering a distance of 640km north to south. However, only nine islands are actually inhabited. The combined area of all the islands is equivalent to one-tenth the size of Mie prefecture. On October 1, 2006, the capital moved from Koror State to Melekeok State. The population of Palau is approximately 20,000 people. 70% are native Palauns, while the remaining 30% are made up of Filipinos.
言葉 Language
国語はパラオ語ですが、英語も広い地域で通用します。また、かつて日本軍が持ち込んだ日本語が今でもパラオ語の中に息づいており、「ベントウ」「コウジョウ」「センキョ」「モンダイ」「イレバ」など、日本語と共通の単語がおよそ３００あると言われています。英語が出来なくても、単語を並べれば、パラオの人々と理解し合えるかもしれません。
The official language of Palau is Palaun, however, English is also used widely. Due to the presence of the Japanese army during World War II, some Japanese words have become part of the Palaun language. Some examples include bento (boxed lunch), kojou (factory), senkyo (election), mondai (problem),and ireba (fake teeth). It is said that there are approximately 300 Japanese words in the Palaun language.
料理 Food
パラオは日本と同じように魚介類を食すお国柄。熱帯魚はもちろんのこと、ナポレオンフィッシュしゃぶしゃぶや、ココナツを餌とするココナツ・クラブ（椰子蟹）、マングローブガニ、大きなシャコ貝など、パラオならではの食材が楽しめます。ほかにも、フルーツしか食べないというフルーツ・バット（こうもり）料理もあるのだそうです。主食は日本と同じお米のほか、茹でたタロいも（里芋の仲間）やタピオカが好んで食されています。
Palauan cuisine is made up of mostly seafood such as tropical fish, napoleon fish shabu shabu, coconut crab, mangrove crab, and giant clams. One unique dish to Palau is fruit bat. The staple of Palau is rice. Taro and tapioca are also popular among the locals.
パラオの名勝地～ロック・アイランド～ Rock Islands
ロックアイランドは、古代の珊瑚礁が何億年も前に海面に押し出されて出来た島々の集まりで、英語では「Ｒｏｃｋ Ｉｓｌａｎｄｓ」と複数形で記されます。柔らかい石灰成分が長い年月をかけて波に削られたため、どの島もかわいらしいマッシュルーム型をしているのが特徴です。周辺の海の美しさからダイビングやシュノーケリングはもちろんのこと、砂浜のある島ではバーベキューやキャンプを楽しむことも出来るため、パラオきっての観光スポットとなっています。
Rock Islands are a series of islands that are made up of ancient coral reefs that contain soft limestone. Due to the presence of the seawater wearing away the surface at the top, the islands have a mushroom-ｌike appearance. Diving、 snorkeling、barbecuing and camping are popular tourist activities in Palau.

コンチネンタル航空の利用が一般的。コンチネンタル航空は、グアム経由でパラオ国際空港に乗り入れています。（グアムからヤップ島を経由し、パラオ国際空港まで約２時間）
Continental Airlines offers flights to Palau via Guam. (From Guam, it takes approximately 2 hours with a stopover at Yap Island). Japan Airlines also offers charter flights from Narita, Chubu and Kansai international airports. It takes about four hours. |

市内へのアクセス Transportation to City Center |
空港からタクシーで、コロール市内まで約１０～２０分程度。料金は１０～２０米ドル。
By taxi., it takes about 10-20 minutes to reach the city center and costs about US$10-$20. Some hotels offer shuttle buses from the airport. |

ビザは３０日以内の観光なら不要。予防接種も不要。但し、パスポートの残存有効期間は、入国時で６ヶ月以上必要です。 Tourists do not require a visa if they are visiting for less than 30 days. Vaccinations are not required. Passports must be valid for six months longer. |

交通 Transportation |
島内の公共交通機関はタクシーのみで、バス・電車はありません。流しのタクシーも少ないので、通常はホテルやレストランで呼んでもらうことになります。 There are no buses and trains in Palau. The only form of public land transportation available is taxis. Due to the low number of taxis operating on the road, it is common to arrange for a taxi to come meet you at hotels and restaurants. Renting a car is also another option as there is an abundance of rental car shops. Regularly scheduled and charter boats connect Palau’s many islands. |

通貨と両替 Currency |
The official currency of Palau is the US Dollar. Money can be exchanged at local banks and hotels, however, you will get a better rate doing it in Japan beforehand. Traveler checks are accepted more commonly than credit cards at restaurants and shops. |

気候 Climate |
温暖気候で、平均気温は２８度前後。雨期は６月から１０月となっています。台風の影響はほとんどありません。 Palau has a warm climate with an average temperature of 28 degrees. The rainy season is from June to October. Typhoons rarely hit Palau. |

パラオ語、英語。ほとんどの年輩の方が日本語を話します。 Palauan and English. Most elderly Palauans can also speak Japanese. |

Palau is located in the same time zone as Japan. |

１１０ボルト、６０ヘルツ。コンセントは日本と同じタイプ。 110 V/60 Hz. Outlets are the same as Japan’s. |

治安 Safety |
非常に良い。但し深夜２時から早朝５時まで外出禁止令が出されていますので、きちんと守りましょう。 Palau is an extremely safe country. There is a law forbidding anyone from going outside from 2 am to 5 am. |

基本的には必要ありませんが、感謝の気持ちは示しましょう。 No tipping is required n Palau. |

免税範囲 Duty-free limits |
お酒２本、タバコ１カートン、香水２つまでは、持ち込んでも無税。 Two bottles of alcohol, one carton of tobacco, and two bottles of perfume. |

切手購入、投函ともに、ホテルのフロントに頼むのがいいでしょう。 Hotels sell stamps and accept outgoing mail. |

国際電話 International Calls |
公衆電話や一部のホテルの部屋からもかけることが出来ます。但し、国際電話専用のカードを購入しなければならないこともあります。 International calls can be made from all public phones and some hotel rooms. You are required to buy an international calling card before doing so. |

飲料水 Drinking Water |
ホテルによっては大丈夫なところもありますが、ミネラルウォーターを飲むことをおすすめします。 Some hotel’s tap water is safe to drink. However, it is best to drink bottled water. |
